Since founding the Reo Group, in her late with her husband Marcelo, they’ve won many industry awards, including BRW Fast 100. Built on the notion that failing forward is the only key to success, Stella believes we can only grow and develop when we’re willing to overcome life’s challenges.
Through facing and overcoming life’s great challenges, we can grow and develop, and has built her organisation on the notion that failing forward is the key to success.
Stella always knew she wanted to help people. As a child, she thought she’d be a doctor. She worked hard academically, and after graduation, when she actually got into the hospital system and completed her intern year, Stella realised being in the medical field wasn’t the right thing for her - having to maintain distance her distance from people, when all she wanted to do was help.
Family and friends were shocked at Stella’s decision to leave medicine, many viewing it as a failure - but she didn’t. Stella is clear of the need to look inside for what truely matters, to recognise our fears and trust that we will learn from our failures, without judgement - even if its the toughest thing we’ve done. Our fear of failure can overcome our desire to accomplish something so overwhelmingly that we quit before we’ve even started. It’s easy to get bogged down in negative self-talk that we lose sight of what we’re capable of.
“I accepted that failure is a critical part of my learning. I learnt to accept that this is how we, as humans need to learn so I soothed myself in knowing that it's all ok and it’s a necessary part of life.”
Part of the learning is accepting we’re not perfect and we all have things to learn. While it’s not always easy at the time, adopting a mind-frame that “there is no failure, only feedback and learning” is what makes all the difference. Establishing a positive state of mind by using self-soothing language to reaffirm to ourselves that we are perfect the way we are, and that despite our failure we are doing the best we can with the resources we have available, makes a big difference.
It sounds cliché, but it’s true – the universe will continue to serve us the same problems until we have learnt how to master them. We must find ways of “implementing our failure lessons immediately into our daily life. We must waste no time in shifting gears."
We can never win the ‘Like me!’ game. We can’t let people’s judgments, stop us from moving forward but If we listened to everyone’s opinions, we would be living their life not ours. We need to find our own confidence in walking to the beat of our own drum.
